Fly fishing basics, just the facts - that’s all this is! Some
simple instructions to get you started on a sport that has worldwide
appeal. Fly fishing is a sport where artificial flies are used to
replicate natural foods that fish are attracted to.
The most important part of fly fishing is to learn how to cast.
When first practicing your casting wear goggles or glasses and be in an
area clear of obstacles or people. To start with, pull about 15 feet
of line from the reel with your left hand (if you’re a leftie you
should reverse this) and let it fall in front of you in a line. With
your thumb on the top of the rod grip quickly move the rod to the 2
o’clock position and turn to watch the line fall behind you. Before it
touches the ground, move the rod to the 10 o’clock position and the
line should fall in front of you in a straight line. Keep practicing
this move and increasing the amount of line that you pull of the rod.
This is just the basic fly fishing technique, but to be done
correctly it may be wise to take a few lessons from a qualified
instructor. Like all sports your skill will improve with practice. Go
on, give it a try!
